Scott Atherton is the President of IMSA and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of both the sanctioning body, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Properties which includes Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway and the Seven Sebring Raceway Hotel at Sebring.

He has been instrumental in developing and maintaining IMSA’s position as the premier professional sports car racing organization in North America. Under his leadership, IMSA has increased its number of OEM’s to 19, seen teams such as Penske and Joest return to the paddock and entered into long-term agreements with NBC Sports Group, WeatherTech and Michelin, among many others.

IMSA
He formerly served as President and CEO of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón and the Panoz Motor Sports Group (PMSG), whose holdings also included Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway, Élan Technologies and IMSA. During his tenure, Atherton led the ALMS from a start-up to an internationally recognized and highly respected professional sports car racing championship. He also engineered a groundbreaking “green racing” alliance with IMSA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy and SAE International.

Atherton joined the Panoz organization in 2000 after serving as President and General Manager of California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. He served in a senior management capacity with Penske Motorsports, Inc., for several years, first as President and General Manager of Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway before shifting to the then-newly constructed California facility.

Prior to his time with Penske and the International Speedway Corporation (ISC), Atherton served for five years as President and General Manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. He also formerly served on the Board of Directors of Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Pro Racing and is a past president of the promoters group of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART).

After graduating from the University of Washington in 1983 with a degree in marketing, his first professional job was with the Domino’s Pizza CART racing team (Douglas Shierson Racing and driver Al Unser, Jr.). Atherton spent nine years with Domino’s Pizza, Inc – transitioning from motorsports into the executive ranks - ultimately becoming a vice president before returning to the motorsport industry in 1993.

Atherton and his wife, Nancy have three adult children and reside in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
